AbleOTUK is a UK-based Occupational Therapy Network and Advocacy Group for practitioners, students, researchers, and educators with disabilities, long-term health conditions, and/or who are neurodivergent.
Launched on Tuesday, 27th July 2021, AbleOTUK exists as a support and advocacy network that centres lived experience and challenges ableism within the profession and beyond.
We are a volunteer-led organisation with no financial support, driven by passion, solidarity, and a commitment to creating change.
We host monthly Zoom/Teams gatherings as closed, safe spaces exclusively for members with lived experience of disability, long-term health conditions, and/or neurodivergence. These support spaces are not open to allies, to maintain confidentiality and a sense of shared understanding.
However, we do host events, discussions, and learning opportunities specifically designed to engage allies, providing spaces to listen, reflect, and develop inclusive practice.
We aim to develop and share resources on a wide range of topics, such as disclosure, inclusive practice, and how to better support occupational therapy colleagues who are disabled, neurodivergent, or living with long-term health conditions.
We are working collaboratively with the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) on initiatives that support shared aims and promote an anti-discriminatory, inclusive, and equitable culture within occupational therapy in the UK.
We do all of this with a strong commitment to intersectionality, recognising that we are STRONGER TOGETHER when united in our vision for a more inclusive profession.
